African Folklore
Published in Paperback by Doubleday (January, 1972)
Author: Richard Mercer, Comp. Dorson
Average review score:

The Story Behind the Book
This superb book had its beginnings in Indiana at the Bloomington campus of Indiana University. An African Folklore Conference was held at the college in 1970. Research papers were presented by folklorists, historians, and colleagues of Richard M. Dorson (1916-1981), IU professor and editor of this book. Professor Dorson led the way for folklore studies to venture from simplistic "wives-tales" to scholarly research, documentation and fieldwork. The first part of this book is an introductory essay written by Professor Dorson. He links folklore, anthropology, literary and oral history concepts to introduce the reader to the second section of the book. Part II is comprised of 16 papers, all presented at the Conference. Part III of the book is actual African folklore. The samples come all areas of Africa. Please note that this book is meant for adult readers, but many excerpts could be shared with children.

Ah Choo

A Great Book for Giggles!
My daughters and I read this book each night at bed-time and always end up giggling like wild! This unique and wonderful story is told completely by pictures. It is a story about an elephant who buys a bouquet of posies and is, unfortunately, quite allergic! An elephant sneeze is a mighty powerful sneeze! It causes quite a ruckus and involves not only an elephant but also a mouse, a rhinoceros, an owl, and a hippopotamus. The details of the pictures and the facial expressions make it easy to "write" your own story. We just love it! This is a great book to spark imaginations and create lasting memories!

Authors: Mercer Mayer and McGraw-Hill Childrens Publishing

Excellent Tool
My son is home for the summer from preschool. I've used this book for him and I find it to be an excellent book. What is good is that he's already leanred the majority of this stuff while in preschool. He is doing this book as a refresher and I've purchased more books from Spectrum because I like the layout of the book. I highly recommend this book to all parents.

Battlefront Namibia
Published in Paperback by Lawrence Hill & Co (December, 1981)
Authors: John Ya-Otto, Ole Gjerstad, and Michael Mercer
Average review score:

Compelling and readable
This book offers a good description of the preceedings leading to Namibia's independence. It highlights the obstacles faced in the establishment and effectiveness of the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) from the point of view of one of its most influential members, John Ya-Otto. The writing style is compelling, so even though it is a detailed historical account, it is very readable.

A Boy, a Dog, a Frog and a Friend
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (July, 1986)
Authors: Mercer Mayer and Marianna Mayer
Average review score:

Children will love this book!
When I was a small child (three or four?) a family friend gave me a set of small books containing A boy, a Dog, a Frog, and a Friend. I was mesmerized by Mercer Mayer's classic pictures. While I liked having an adult share it with me, this was a book I most enjoyed looking at on my own. I cherished the set but over the years I lost all but one of the tiny books. I was delighted to find this small copy. A wonderful book for young imaginative children.

Buying the Wind: Regional Folklore in the United States
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (August, 1972)
Author: Richard Mercer Dorson
Average review score:

Regional Folklore of the USA
By contemporary standards, this book is dated and perhaps a bit politically incorrect and simplistic. But the book is a valuable archive of fascinating folktales, beliefs, and descriptions of regionally-based forms of traditional culture in the United States. Dorson provides a great variety of stories that are well-worth reading, and they could provide the basis for further study. I found it especially interesting how Dorson was showing ways to integrate the study of folklore into the study of history and geography with this collection of materials. I also found this book to be interesting as a resource for gauging how the thinking of social scientists and humanities scholars has changed over the past 30 years. It also provides a great resource for comparing how regional folklore has changed throughout a sort period of time in this nation.

Cluster of Jesse Mercer
Published in Hardcover by Renaissance Pr (June, 1983)
Authors: C. Ray Brewster and Vladimir Voikoff
Average review score:

Jesse Mercer was an incredible Baptist pioneer
Jesse Mercer was active for God. His theology was strongly Calvinist, and he believed that his life should be spent in active service with the aim of bringing glory to God. This book tells some of his biography, and emphasizes his activity of collecting and publishing Christian hymns. I do not actually own this book, but have checked it out of the library from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. One could only wish that the current leadership of Mercer University (Atlanta, Georgia) which bears Mercer's family name would live with such theological conviction regarding Scriptural truth.
